Grade guidance overview

Stainless steel grade selection depends on corrosion exposure, application, fabrication method, surface finish, temperature, hygiene requirement, drawing specification and certificate expectation. SS 304 is commonly discussed for general fabrication and clean industrial use, while SS 316 is often reviewed for marine, coastal, chemical and higher corrosion exposure. SS 202 is usually discussed for suitable cost-sensitive fabrication work, and grades such as SS 410, SS 420 or SS 430 may appear in selected mechanical or sheet applications.

The purpose of this technical data page is to help buyers ask better questions. Before asking for a quote, buyers should confirm whether the project needs a specific standard, grade, heat number, MTC, mill certificate, inspection, finish, tolerance or application approval.

Finish terms should match the product form. A sheet finish conversation is different from a polished pipe or machined flange conversation.

For practical RFQs, buyers should not rely only on a grade name. A good request includes product form, grade, size, thickness, schedule, diameter, length, finish, quantity, certificate requirement and delivery location. If the enquiry is for food, pharma, marine, chemical, heat, machining or structural use, mention the application clearly.

Application-based selection notes

Different applications require different conversations. Commercial kitchen fabricators often discuss SS 304 sheets, tubes and polished finishes. Coastal and marine buyers often compare SS 304 and SS 316. Food, pharma and dairy equipment buyers may discuss SS 304, SS 316 and SS 316L with hygiene and certificate expectations. Certificate and documentation note
